I went to Aaron's place in Santa Barbara this weekend. He is getting over surgery so he's been staying at his parents place for the past few weeks. Because we are not shooting this weekend I had the time to visit him, and it was a nice break from being so busy for the past week. It was very fun.
His neighbours were having a party and we stopped by. It was a bunch of older people but Paul Reubens was there. I really wanted to go up to him and say something but I didn't know what to say so I didn't do anything. Then when I am in line for desert Pee Wee comes up to me and asks me what the desert is. I said to him, "It's some sort of banana fosters type thing." he said thanks then I motioned to how the servers apron strings were in the batter and said something like "Yeah, and you know since her apron stapes are in the batter it's gotta be good. Because you know, that's were the flavor comes from." He gave me a really odd look and then looked me up and down sort of sizing me up and he walked away.
Then we went out to dinner. The restaurant we went to had a one hour wait so we went and bought some fresh (very fresh) tuna from a fisherman and took it to a sort of gutting shop to get it sliced up. While we were there we picked up 2 dozen fresh oysters.
We took it all back and proceeded to begin shucking the oysters (we asked the guy who sold them to us to do it, but he knew better).
That is a very hard thing to do. They believe they own a shucking knife but they couldn't find it. So we used a screwdriver, steak knife, and hammer.
Aaron's dad cut himself twice (once with the steak knife, once on the oyster). I ripped up my hands pretty good but no blood. I eventually learned the right way to do it. You hold the oyster in your left hand over a sink. With your right hand you hit the oyster with a hammer until you break a hole half way through the oyster. Then insert a flathead screwdriver into the hole at a 45 degree angle and pry it open.
It was pretty funny how bloody the oysters that Arron's dad opened up were.
So tomorrow I head home and I devote the day to cleaning my apartment. When I'm working on the movie I only have time to mess up my place, not to clean. So it's very dirty.
The movie is going very well. The days and not overly long and I always leave tried but looking forward to the next day. It's hard work but I'm really enjoying myself. I get along with the cast and crew very well. Yoram the DP is such a nice guy, he's really a pleasure to work with and I'm learning a lot by being on set. He's also the best camera operator I've ever worked with.
I'm ending up doing B Camera Operation and 1st AC for Stedicam, and I will be 2nd Unit DP once 2nd unit starts shooting stuff. I really like doing the operating but it's tricky because I need to frame for 1:85 and TV.
I would post pictures the from the set, but I left my camera on set. I have one picture which I put onto my laptop because I had to check how Erika's shirt looked next to the blue screen. Holding the shirt is Mike. He started out as camera PA but he is now a 2nd AC. He's doing a great job.
They Call Me Mr. Tibbs is a very bad movie.
